JUST IN: Sudan PM Abdallah Hamdok Is Under House Arrest

RIYADH:  Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok has been placed under house arrest and a number of Cabinet ministers and other officials arrested in an apparent coup by a still unidentified military force, local and regional media reported early Monday.

Alhadath TV said four cabinet ministers and a member of Sudan’s Sovereign Council  were among those arrested.

There was no immediate comment from the military.

Reacting to the developments, the Sudanese Professionals’ Association, Sudan’s main pro-democratic political group, called on people to take to the street to counter an apparent military coup.

The association  also said there were Internet and phone signal outages in the country.

One of those arrested was Ali Al-Rayh Al-Sanhouri, secretary-general of the Sudanese Baath Party, Al-Sharq reported, quoting unnamed sources.

The report said Council of Sovereignty member Mohammed Al-Jawki was also under arrest, along with Minister of Cabinet Affairs Khaled Omar Yusuf.

The raiders have surrounded the residence of Hamdok and stormed the house of his media adviser, whom they then took under custody, various media reports said.

The arrests comes after weeks of rising tensions between Sudan’s civilian and military leaders. A failed coup attempt in September fractured the country along old lines, pitting more conservative Islamists who want a military government against those who toppled autocratic former ruler Omar Al-Bashir in mass protests. In recent days, both camps have taken to the street in demonstrations.

Top Actor on ‘Friends’ James Michael Tyler Has Passed Away

James Michael Tyler, the actor famous for playing Central Perk employee Gunther on “Friends,” has died of prostate cancer.

Tyler’s manager Toni Benson said he died “peacefully in his home” on Sunday October 24, at the age of 59.

Tyler’s family said in a statement;

“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh “Friend”), from the hit series ‘Friends,’ but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband.

“Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life.”

Tyler who played Gunther for 10 seasons on the sitcom, announced his cancer battle in June after he was unable to attend the Friends reunion taping in-person earlier this year; he appeared on the special via Zoom.

“It was bittersweet, honestly,” Tyler said of the reunion. “I was very happy to be included. It was my decision not to be a part of that physically and make an appearance on Zoom, basically, because I didn’t wanna bring a downer on it, you know? I didn’t want to be like, ‘Oh, and by the way, Gunther has cancer.’

He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in September 2018, and by the time of his announcement, it had already spread to his bones. “It’s stage 4. Late stage cancer,” Tyler said in June. “So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me.”

In addition to his role on Friends, Tyler also appeared in episodes of ScrubsJust Shoot Me! and as himself the Matt LeBlanc-starring Episodes, where he was recruited by his former cast mate to appear in a promotional video.

Sameer tyre manufacturers to close down Nairobi Factory.

Sameer Africa is set to close down its manufacturing plant here in Nairobi in favour of importing tyres. The company which makes the Yana tyres brand is set to close down the factory and instead import tyres from offshore manufacturers in Asia.

According to Sameer Africa Chief Executive Officer Allan Walmsley the company’s board of directors unanimously made the decision after receiving the necessary approval from the Capital Markets Authority. “As a result, the company will incur a one-off charge in respect of plant and inventory impairment and employee severance costs estimated at approximately Kshs. 725 million. The earnings for the current financial year are therefore expected to be lower by more than 25 per cent of the earnings reported for the same period in 2015.”

SAMEER

The company has also issued a profit warning due to expected impairment and employee severance costs. The struggling manufacturer had reduced its local production due to high competition from cheap arrivals and joined the importers.

However, there will be no impact on customers, end-users and the supply of the Yana brand to the East African market. Yana Tyres will continue to be engineered under the supervision of the company’s own chemists and engineers.

Sameer Africa will also continue to invest in research and development to offer the market tyres that are purpose-built for African roads and will continue with the roll-outs of its Yana Tyre Centre offering across East Africa.
